'Crossing the Line' was written by Alex Scott in the early 1990’s and updated in mid-2000's. It is based upon his personal experiences as he grew up in the North of Ireland through the times of 'The Troubles'. It’s a reflection of his life and takes into account major developments in the peace process in Ireland as a whole, which led to the ‘Good Friday Agreement’ on 10 April 1998, and the subsequent benefits that followed.
The effects on the men, women and children living through the conflict are rarely discussed, or indeed dramatised for the stage in terms of their individual experiences, their family traumas, their sympathies, their relationships, or the impact that both the ‘war’ itself and the outcome of the peace process had on them over the years to the present day.
The story demonstrates the interpretation and delivery of events from various perspectives both from the media and on a personal level; the effects on family relationships, on children, on communities, and tests the ‘laws of attraction’ between men and women whose loyalties become torn because of the circumstances in which they found themselves.
Reflecting tensions and emotions between warring factions, as well as love and family loyalty behind closed doors; it depicts the impact on everyone involved. A love story grows, there is humour, and normal everyday life prevails as the story unfolds despite the challenges. The music and songs have been written with skill and emotion, and combined with the script, the work presents a powerful and gripping drama.
A modern-day love story set in the backdrop of ‘The Troubles’ in war torn city of Belfast This musical will appeal to a wide audience of people and that it will provide a rare insight into the history of ‘The Troubles’ and the people on both sides of the ‘line’, that experienced them first hand, as well as being excellent entertainment. The musical is a metaphor for every conflict and demonstrates that good can prevail over evil.
‘Belfast the Movie’ was a huge Oscar winning hit about the start of ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland in 1969. ‘Crossing The Line - The Musical’, tells the continuing story of ‘The Troubles’….moving to the final stage of the political process – with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. This momentous occasion ended 30 years of civil war and ushered in peace on the island of Ireland for the first time in generations.
